Safety Information

Safety is always a top priority at the Loomis Union School District (LUSD). Our district emphasizes keeping students and staff safe at school by promoting a positive school climate.  You will find specific information on how LUSD is working to keep our school community safe on the navigation pane on the right.

  • LUSD has installed Purple Air monitors at all school campuses.  Information can be found on the Purple Air website.  For additional information on school site response to air quality levels please reference our Air Quality Index Guidance and Actions document below.

  • Loomis Union School District employs multiple measures to monitor school campuses.  We have security cameras at all sites that enhance the visibility into the day-to-day activities and operations.  These security cameras are regularly evaluated for functionality and updates that may affect viewing coverage.

Staff and volunteers provide campus supervision throughout the school day.  Each school site enforces a visitor check-in/out policy and requires both school staff and visitors to wear identification badges.  Additionally, school staff receive training on campus monitoring procedures and active supervision.

  • Loomis Union School District prepares students to use the most up-to date technology and learning tools. Just as we want students to be safe at school, it is imperative that we keep our students safe on the Internet.  LUSD uses Common Sense Media curriculum to provide digital citizenship instruction to all students.

The internet opens a world of possibilities for children. The information highway offers children many opportunities for learning, constructive entertainment, and personal growth. At the same time, parents need to know about the risks their children face online and how their children can use the internet safely. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about internet use and to know what their children are doing on the internet.

LUSD employs web filtering services in the interest of keeping harmful and inappropriate content from being accessed. We follow the laws outlined in the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and follow industry standard procedures when reviewing technology services. Internet content filtering and computer security is not perfect and it may be possible for users to access information that is intended for adults. We believe that the benefits of Internet access and computer access in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration far exceed any disadvantages. Ultimately, parents are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their child should follow.

  • Loomis Union School District has emergency plans and procedures in place for various situations, including lockdowns, and schools routinely conduct emergency drills to make sure that everyone is prepared in the event of an actual emergency situation. It is important for parents to be knowledgeable of these procedures and to know what occurs during emergency situations.  Please contact your principal for more information.

  • In addition to outreach during emergency situations, Loomis Union School District collaborates with local agencies to proactively address important topics for students such as cyberbullying and drug awareness/prevention and staff training related to emergency response.  Both site and district personnel work closely with our Placer County Sheriff’s School Resource Officer (SRO).  The SRO works with staff to promote site safety and to mentor and educate our students.

  • During extreme heat events, all school sites monitor temperature.  If necessary, school activities and/or locations are modified.  For additional information on school site response to extreme heat please reference our Extreme Heat Guidance document.

  • Employees, chaperones,  and volunteers supervising students are required to be fingerprinted.  More information on the fingerprinting process and Livescan can be found on our district website.

  • LUSD is committed to providing a safe and positive school climate. Staff and students participate in prevention education including but not limited to: review of school/classroom policies, assemblies, character education, and recognizing and reporting harassment.  Should a student wish to report an incident, an incident form can be provided in the front office.  Should a parent wish to report an incident, please reach out to your child’s teacher or the school principal.

Depending on the nature of the reported incident, investigation and follow-up is completed by the classroom teacher or principal.  For threats made toward oneself, an individual, group, or the school, the school principal instigates a threat assessment process which begins with a review of the threat and, if needed, investigation and follow-up by a multidisciplinary team.  When warranted, the School Resource Officer (SRO) is included as part of the threat assessment team.

  • The Loomis Union School District’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) is a comprehensive safety plan developed in full compliance with California law under Title 8, Section 3203 of the California Code of Regulations, as enforced by Cal/OSHA. This plan is designed to proactively identify, evaluate, and correct potential hazards in the workplace, ensuring the safety and well-being of all district employees. The district actively maintains and updates its IIPP to address any new hazards, operational changes, or safety requirements. Through ongoing training, hazard communication, and employee participation, the Loomis Union School District is committed to providing a safe work environment and meeting all legal obligations set forth by California's occupational safety standards.

  • Loomis Union School District encourages the reporting of crimes and suspicious activities.  For non-emergency crime reporting, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Online Crime Reporting system can be accessed via their website.

  • In the event that an emergency takes place on a school campus, student safety is our top concern. Depending on the level of the emergency, parents will be notified. Please make certain that your child’s school has your most current emergency contact information.

  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) contributes to a predictable, safe school environment and a positive school climate.  PBIS is an evidenced based, tiered approach to addressing student behaviors through integrated behavioral data, systems, and practices.  It is not a curriculum, but rather a program that integrates across all aspects of the school day (in the classroom, on the playground, etc) to explicitly teach, reinforce, and correct student behaviors.

Four LUSD schools—Franklin, Loomis Grammar, Penryn, and Placer—use the PBIS program.  H. Clarke Powers and Loomis Basin Charter Schools utilize similar evidence-based practices tied to the International Baccalaureate (IB) attributes.

  • Each year schools are required by law to update a school Safety Plan. The plan includes procedures and outlines crisis response for various emergency situations.  Schools collaborate annually with community partners to develop their Safety Plan.  A copy of the Safety Plan can be found on each school’s website.

  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) teaches skills that help students set goals, make decisions, collaborate with one another, problem solve, make friends, and build confidence.  SEL supports core learning such as math, science, and literacy by building cooperation, communication, and decision-making skills.  LUSD uses Second Step curriculum to provide SEL instruction to all students.

  • We would like to remind residents that traffic safety around schools is a collaborative effort. Drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to obey the rules of the road and to follow your school site’s pick-up and drop-off procedures to ensure safety.

  • The Loomis Union School District (LUSD) is committed to maintaining a safe and secure work environment through its Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP), effective July 1, 2024. This plan ensures that all employees, students, and visitors are protected from any form of workplace violence, including physical threats or verbal harassment. LUSD takes all reports of violence or threats seriously, investigating incidents thoroughly and implementing preventative measures. The WVPP outlines the responsibilities of all employees to report incidents promptly, follow safety practices, and contribute to a positive work environment.  This plan is accessible at all LUSD sites and offices and available here on the district website.
